Worms 4 Mayhem
Games

Worms 4 Mayhem

Worms 4: Mayhem is the third Worms game in two years, which is a lot of worms. But more importantly, it's hard to believe there's such a rampant demand for these games, considering they really never change or improve over time. Aside from the requisite transition to 3D, the Worms series hasn't changed much since it first appeared on the PC in 1995. Each new installment may tweak the weapon lineup ever so slightly, but these worms tend to stick to their guns. That's both a good and a bad thing for Worms 4: Mayhem. On one hand, you can expect to be chucking holy hand grenades, detonating old ladies, and calling in air strikes in the hopes of destroying the opposing team of little pink worms. On the other hand, if you've done all that before, there's really no reason to play this game, because it doesn't offer anything new and worthwhile.

Take Command Second Manassas
Games

Take Command Second Manassas
Self-professed hole-in-the-wall game developer MadMinute Games made quite a splash at the start of 2005 with Take Command: The Battle of Bull Run. Although the company may be a tiny outfit with just two core designers in Adam Bryant and Norb Timpko, both the game itself and the War3D engine that powered it got raves from hardcore wargamers and Civil War buffs. That success apparently wasn't a fluke, either, since the recently released sequel, Take Command: Second Manassas, does an equally good job at depicting another key battle in the war between the states. Although everything will feel a touch "been there, done that" to those who played the original game, hardcore wargames are rarely this approachable and enjoyable. Casual strategy gamers might find that MadMinute has too much of the real Civil War in its Civil War game, as the design has more in common with an old Avalon Hill board game than the typical strategy computer game, but you can't quibble with either the playability or the historical accuracy.

Forgotten Realms: Demon Stone
Games

Forgotten Realms: Demon Stone
Within the dominion of high fantasy, there are two staples upon which you can always rely. Running parallel are J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings and the Dungeons & Dragons universes--the former of which stays grounded thanks to a Victorian travelogue-level of mundane detail, and the latter of which benefits from a voluminous world and detailed mythos. A couple of years ago, Northern California-based developer Stormfront Studios established an accessible, enjoyable formula for melding the high-fantasy feel with visceral action in The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, and now it brings the same to the Dungeons & Dragons world. Forgotten Realms: Demon Stone is a small evolutionary step above what Stormfront did with The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, and players who appreciate that brand of brute-force, hack-and-slash gameplay should find in it a great-looking and enjoyable, if somewhat familiar, experience
