By the 1600s, several European nations wanted to rule the area that became the United States. France and Spain established colonies in the region. The Netherlands and Sweden also founded colonies. England had the most success at colonizing America, however. England founded Virginia, its first American colony, in 1607. The colony of Georgia followed in 1733. Between these two dates, England founded or took control of eleven other American colonies.
