Each entry in the Reader’s Guide to Literature in English identifies a particular subject--for example, Charles Dickens- then lists those books generally considered to be the most important on that subject, followed by an essay--more than 600 in all, written by 300 scholars and critics of English literature--provide the reader with advice on the quality, emphasis, range and depth of coverage, and point of view, of each book listed.
This survey of secondary sources in English literature is now widely regarded as the most authoritative text in its field, indispensable in academic, public, and high school libraries.
