Mailer took the material and produced an immense book with a dry, unwavering voice and meticulous attention to detail on Gilmores life--particularly his relationship with Nicole Baker, whom Gilmore claims to have killed. What unfolds is a powerful drama, a distorted love affair, and a chilling look into the mind of a murderer in his countdown with a firing squad.
The Executioners Song is a 1980 Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Norman Mailer that depicts the events surrounding the execution of Gary Gilmore by the state of Utah for murder. The title of the book may be a play on "The Lord High Executioners Song" from Gilbert and Sullivans The Mikado. "The Executioners Song" is also the title of one of Mailers earlier poems, published in F**k You magazine in September 1964 and reprinted in Cannibals and Christians.
