Shizuku lives a simple life, dominated by her love for stories and writing. One day she notices that all the library books she has have been previously checked out by the same person: 'Seiji Amasawa'. Curious as to who he is, Shizuku meets a boy her age whom she finds infuriating, but discovers to her shock that he is her 'Prince of Books'. As she grows closer to him, she realises that he merely read all those books to bring himself closer to her. The boy Seiji aspires to be a violin maker in Italy, and it is his dreams that make Shizuku realise that she has no clear path for her life. There were two earth shattering events that took place in Los Angeles in 1994 : the Northridge earthquake and the birth of Tenacious D, the band headed by Jack Black and Kyle Gass
The two met as members of the Actor's Gang an ensemble theatre troup in Los Angeles founded by Tin Robbins, where they discovered their mutual love of rock and roll. From their first gnarly performance at Al's Bar in downtown Los Angeles, where they performed their only song 'Tribute' to their emergenceas the self proclaimed Greatest Band On earth, 'The D', as they are known to their legion of fans, has rocked the socks off all who have heard them.
Following their professional debut at Al's Bar, they appeared on the HBO late 90's sketch comedy program, "Mr.Show" which led to HBO creating, half hour "Tenacious D" shorts featuring the band. Having been institutionalized for most of his life, Jack (Andrew Garfield) is finally released from prison at the age of 24. He and another boy murdered a child when they themselves were children. The film follows Jack's attempts to readjust to the world outside of confinement and restart a life which never really got going.

Under the fatherly mentoring of Terry (Peter Mullan), his parole contact and social worker, he experiences a coming of age, which would normally have happened years ago. Forces from the past are constantly upon him. As we learn more about the events leading up to the crime which has ruined so many lives, there is an increasing sense of suspense, intrigue and ultimately doom: the tabloid press and Terry's real son are not going to let things lie.
